What batteries do Hunter Douglas shades take?
Twelve AA batteries for PowerView shades on the 18V wand. Eight AA for older PowerRise 1.0 shades on the 12V wand. No other size, and no rechargeable pack unless your shade was ordered with one.
Count the bays in your old wand if you are not sure which you have — twelve or eight tells you everything.
How long should they last?
Between nine months and two years, and the spread is not random. Four things move it:
How often the shade runs. A shade on a twice-daily schedule does about 1,400 cycles a year. One you touch occasionally might do 200. That alone is most of the difference.
How heavy the shade is. A wide Provenance woven wood pulls far more current than a small Duette. In the same house, on the same day, the heaviest shade dies first and it is not a fault.
Temperature. Alkaline cells lose capacity in the cold and vent in the heat. A wand in a sunroom has a harder life than one in a hallway.
Whether the twelve cells are matched. This is the one people get wrong, and it is the subject of the next section.
Why one cheap battery ruins eleven good ones
PowerView wires the cells in series. The current that flows through the string is limited by the weakest cell in it — so twelve batteries behave like the worst one of the twelve.
That has three practical consequences:
- Never mix brands. Different chemistries have different internal resistance.
- Never mix old and new. A fresh cell next to a half-dead one is wasted.
- Replace all twelve at once, every time, even if some still test fine.
A bargain twelve-pack is not twelve cheap batteries. It is one cheap battery, twelve times over, and the shade performs like the worst of them.
Which brand
Hunter Douglas specifies Duracell or Energizer alkaline, and that is what we would use. It is not brand loyalty — it is leak resistance. Both carry a leakage warranty, and leaking is the failure that does permanent damage.
Store-brand and no-name cells are the ones we see leaked inside dead wands. The saving is about four dollars. The wand it destroys costs twenty.

Getting the direction right
There is an orientation diagram printed on the tube. Read it.
Because the cells are in series, one battery inserted backwards blows the fuse in the end cap — and that fuse is not serviceable. It is the single most common way a working wand becomes a dead one, and it happens most often to people who have done it a dozen times before and stopped looking.
When new batteries do not fix it
If twelve fresh matched cells change nothing, the batteries were not the problem. Work through the six-symptom check — three symptoms mean the wand has failed, and three mean something else entirely that a new wand would not fix.
