Where Is the Reset Button on Hunter Douglas Motorized Blinds?
It is on the headrail, it is small, and Hunter Douglas calls it the programming button. Here is where to look and what each kind of press does.
We sell battery wands, so we will add the part nobody else says: if pressing it does nothing, that is the most useful result you can get, because it tells you the shade has no power.
Where is the programming button on a PowerView shade?
On the headrail — the horizontal box at the top that the fabric hangs from.
- It is usually at one end of the headrail, most often the right-hand side as you face the window.
- On shades with a fascia or valance it sits behind that trim; you may need to reach up and behind, or feel along the back edge of the headrail.
- On many shades there is a small LED right next to it. That LED is the one that blinks red at the end of a move when the batteries are running low.
- It is a push button, not a pinhole, and it needs no tool.
If the shade has a battery wand, the wand is on the back of the headrail too, clipped into a bracket, and the programming button is usually near the motor end of it.
What does the button do?
Two different things, depending on how long you hold it.
Press and release: the shade runs to fully open or fully closed. This is the ten-second power test. A shade that moves has power; the motor and the wand are fine.
Press and hold for about six seconds: the shade jogs — one small up-and-down twitch — then runs on its own to fully open and fully closed to relearn its limits. This is the shade reset. Let go the moment it jogs. Hunter Douglas uses it for a shade that stops short, travels the wrong distance or has lost its limits, and it is the first step in reversing a shade that runs the wrong way.
The button is also half of the pairing procedure: holding it while pressing OPEN on a remote in programming mode joins the shade to that remote's group. Full steps on how to reset a Hunter Douglas remote and re-pair the shade.
Is there a reset button on the remote?
- Legacy PowerView (Pebble and Surface remotes, before fall 2022): yes, a small recessed button on the back of the remote module. Hold it about six seconds until the group lights flash. It starts the remote on a fresh network, so every shade then needs pairing again — try new CR2032 cells first.
- PowerView Gen 3 (spring 2022 onward): no. Hunter Douglas says Gen 3 remotes cannot be factory reset; you delete and reconfigure them in the PowerView app.
Is there a reset button on the hub?
On the Legacy PowerView hub, yes, two: a P button (hold until the hub turns amber to update repeaters) and an R button (hold until the front LED goes out for a full reset, which is mainly used when the Wi-Fi network changes). Neither has anything to do with a shade that will not move. A hub with a red LED has lost its network; a shade with no power is a different fault.
My shade has no programming button
Then one of three things is true:
- It is a PowerRise shade, the generation before PowerView. Those use an infrared remote and reset from the remote (lower fully, hold DOWN five seconds, press UP), not from the headrail. PowerRise or PowerView? tells them apart.
- It is not a Hunter Douglas motor. Hunter Douglas itself notes that a motorized shade with no programming button may be running a Somfy motor or may not be one of theirs.
- It is hiding. Behind the fascia, under the fabric stack, or at the opposite end from where you looked. Run a finger along the whole back edge of the headrail.
I pressed it and nothing happened
That is the result worth having. A shade that does not move, jog or make any sound from its own programming button has no power, and no remote, app, hub or reset will change that. The fault is in the power path: the AA cells, the battery wand, or the cable between wand and motor.
Before buying anything, put twelve fresh AA cells from one pack into the wand (eight on a 12V wand), all the right way round, and press the button again. Still silent means the wand or cable. The six-symptom check on is it the wand? narrows it to one.
Which wand do I need?
Count the batteries in the old one. That is the entire test.
- Twelve AA — the 18V wand, part 7520068000
- Eight AA — the 12V wand, part 7520069000
