Lithium or alkaline in a Hunter Douglas shade?
Short answer: Hunter Douglas specifies alkaline, and alkaline is the safe default. Lithium AA will work, last considerably longer and — the part that matters most — will not leak and destroy the wand. But it is outside the manufacturer's stated guidance, and you should know what you are choosing.

Note the first two rows. Lithium AA are 1.5V cells, not 3.7V. They are a drop-in replacement for alkaline in a way that rechargeable NiMH is not — which is a different question we cover below.
The case for lithium
They do not leak. This is the whole argument. Leaked alkaline is what kills battery wands — the residue eats the contacts and the spring, and by the time you see the crust the wand is finished. Lithium cells do not vent that way. If you have already replaced one wand because of corrosion, lithium is how you avoid replacing the next one.
They last roughly two to three times as long in a load like this, so the cost per year is closer than the shelf price suggests.
They hold voltage in the cold. If a shade is on a north-facing or unheated window, this is a real difference rather than a marginal one.
The case for alkaline
It is what Hunter Douglas specifies, and staying inside manufacturer guidance is worth something if you ever need to argue a warranty point on the motor.
It is a third of the price, and if your wand is in a temperate room and you use good cells, leakage is unlikely rather than inevitable.
The voltage curve suits the motor. Alkaline sags gradually as it depletes, so a shade that is slowing down is telling you the batteries are going. Lithium holds voltage almost flat and then drops off a cliff — better performance, less warning.
What we would actually do
Alkaline in ordinary rooms, replaced on schedule with a good brand. Lithium in the hard places — a sunroom, an unheated space, a high window you would rather not get the ladder out for twice, or a wand you have already lost once to corrosion.
Either way, all twelve cells the same brand, the same chemistry and the same age. Never mix lithium and alkaline in one wand. The series wiring means mismatched chemistries fight each other, and that is worse than either on its own.
What about rechargeables?
Loose NiMH rechargeables are the one option we would avoid. They sit at 1.2V rather than 1.5V, so twelve of them give you about 14.4V instead of 18V. The shade will run slowly, struggle on heavier fabrics, and need recharging often.
If you want rechargeable, the right answer is Hunter Douglas's own rechargeable wand — a different part, designed for it, around $98 — not loose cells in a wand built for alkaline.
If yours already leaked
Corrosion inside the tube is not cleanable in any lasting way. The residue keeps working its way through the spring and the end cap. Find the wand that fits your shade, and load the new one with lithium if that window has form for it.
