How to Reset a Hunter Douglas Remote and Re-Pair the Shade

Everything on this page is free to try. Do the cheap steps in order and you will either have a working shade or know exactly which part failed.

We sell battery wands, and we will tell you plainly where a reset helps and where it is a waste of ten minutes.

Do I actually need to reset the remote?

Usually not. When a Hunter Douglas remote "needs a reset", it is nearly always one of two things:

Rule out both before resetting anything. What each blinking light means covers the cells; the re-pair steps are two sections down.

How do I reset a Legacy PowerView (Pebble) remote?

Legacy PowerView is everything before fall 2022 — the Pebble and Surface remotes with six group buttons, OPEN, CLOSE, STOP, the heart, and ALL.

If the remote shows no lights at all with fresh cells correctly fitted, no reset will bring it back, and your original dealer or Hunter Douglas is the place to go.

Can a PowerView Gen 3 remote be reset?

No. Hunter Douglas says Gen 3 remotes (spring 2022 onward) cannot be factory reset. If one misbehaves, you delete it and set it up again in the PowerView app, and shades are assigned to its groups there: More, Accessories, Remotes, pick the group, tap the edit icon, select or deselect the shade, tap Sync.

Changing the cells does not erase anything on a Gen 3 remote. If no button lights up at all, check the cells; if a shade will not respond, check that it is actually in the group you are pressing.

How do I re-pair a shade to a Legacy PowerView remote?

This is the fix for "the remote works the other shades but not this one", and for a shade that went quiet after a battery change. It takes a minute.

  1. Press and hold STOP on the remote until the lights blink. The remote is now in programming mode.
  2. Press and release the group number you want the shade to live in (1 to 6).
  3. Find the small programming button on the shade's headrail — usually at one end, often behind the fascia.
  4. Press and hold the headrail button and, while holding it, press and release OPEN on the remote.
  5. The shade jogs — a single small up-and-down twitch. That is the confirmation. Let go.
  6. Hold STOP again until the remote stops blinking.

Press the group number and OPEN. If it moves, you are done and you have spent nothing.

To take a shade out of a group, repeat the same steps with CLOSE instead of OPEN.

How do I reset the shade itself?

The shade has its own reset, and it is the one that sorts out a shade that stops short, travels the wrong distance or seems to have lost its limits.

Press and hold the programming button on the headrail for about six seconds, until the shade jogs once. Release it. The shade then runs by itself to fully open and fully closed to relearn its limits. Let it finish before you touch the remote.

A quick press-and-release of the same button simply runs the shade up or down, which is the fastest way to prove the shade has power.

My shade is an older PowerRise — does it need a reset after new batteries?

The older PowerRise 2.0 systems (infrared remote, before PowerView) can need a reset after a battery change, and the old owner's guides give it as: lower the shade fully, press and hold DOWN on the remote for five seconds, then press UP to raise it fully. Silhouette versions tilt the vanes fully open first. If yours is a PowerRise system, do that before concluding the batteries were bad.

Not sure which system you have? PowerRise or PowerView? tells them apart in one look.

I did all of that and the shade still does nothing

Then stop resetting. If the headrail button produces no travel, no jog, no sound on fresh, correctly fitted batteries, the shade has no power, and that is the one fault a reset cannot touch. It is the AA cells, the battery wand or the cable between wand and motor.

The six-symptom check on is it the wand? tells you which, and will talk you out of a purchase where it should.

Which wand do I need?

Count the batteries in the old one. That is the entire test.
