Hunter Douglas Silhouette Repair

A Silhouette is fabric vanes suspended between two sheer facings. That construction is what makes it look the way it does, and it is also why some Silhouette faults are a cheap fix and others mean the shade is beyond saving.

We sell battery wands for the motorized version. We do not sell cords, cord loops, vanes or sheers, and the fastest way to be useful here is to tell you which of those you are looking at.

Is my Silhouette corded or motorized?

Motorized — a remote, an app or a button, and a battery wand, battery tube, transformer or solar panel in the headrail. PowerRise and PowerView are the motorized systems. This is the one we can help with.

Corded — a continuous cord loop down one side, or a pull cord.

If you have been operating it by hand with a cord, nothing on this site will fix it. Say so now rather than three paragraphs in.

What goes wrong with a motorized Silhouette?

In the order it actually happens:

The battery wand. The most common failure and the cheapest. Either the cells leaked and corroded the contacts, or the fuse in the end cap blew because a battery went in backwards. Neither is repairable; the part is $17.95–$24.95 and takes about two minutes with no tools.

Flat or mismatched batteries. The cells are wired in series, so one weak battery drags the whole string down. A full set of fresh identical name-brand AAs first, always.

A lost pairing. Hunter Douglas says a shade with a poor power supply can lose its programming. Re-pairing is free, and it explains why a shade sometimes ignores the remote right after a new wand goes in.

The motor. Rarer and expensive. If you can hear a hum, grind or click with no movement, power is reaching the motor and a new wand changes nothing. We do not sell motors.

PowerView troubleshooting walks the whole sequence, and is it the wand? settles it in about two minutes.

My Silhouette cord loop is broken or slipping

Not something we can supply. A cord loop or an internal lift string is a workshop repair — the headrail comes down and the cords are replaced as a set.

It is worth doing on a shade whose vanes are still good, because the vanes are the expensive part. Get the price before you commit.

The vanes are torn, creased or will not close

This is the one that decides whether the shade is worth keeping.

The vanes are bonded to the sheer facings. A torn vane, a vane that has come unstuck, or sheers that have gone brittle and yellow in the sun cannot be repaired in any practical way — there is no part for it, and no battery wand or cord affects it.

If the vanes and sheers are sound, repair the mechanism. If they are not, the shade is finished whatever the mechanism is doing, and you are looking at a replacement.

My Silhouette won't go up — what is it?

Full version: shade won't go up.

Which battery wand does a Silhouette take?

Count the batteries in the old wand. Nothing else decides it.

Hunter Douglas split this line at May 2010. Shades built after that date take the current 8-cell 12V or 12-cell 18V wand — both of which we stock.

Shades built before May 2010 are handled by Hunter Douglas's own Silhouette Battery Tube Replacement Kit, KIT9112, whatever cell type the original used. We do not stock KIT9112. If that is what you need, Hunter Douglas or your dealer is where to get it, and we would rather say so than sell you a wand that will not fit.

What is this going to cost?

On a post-2010 motorized Silhouette, the likely answer is a $17.95–$24.95 part you fit yourself. A cord loop, a motor or new vanes are all a different order of money.

What Hunter Douglas blind repair costs sets out the ladder, including the warranty limits — five years, original owner only, through the original dealer. If you bought the house with the shades in it, you have no warranty at any age.

What we stock

All new, genuine Hunter Douglas stock, shipped free within the United States, same business day on orders before 3pm Eastern.

We do not sell cords, cord loops, vanes, sheers, motors, remotes or KIT9112. If the checks above point at one of those, a repair shop or Hunter Douglas is what you need.

Not sure what you have? Call (609) 474-4242 weekdays 9am–5pm Eastern or send a photo of the headrail to support@batterywands.com.
